The March 2008 issue of the British Medical Journal published the results of a recent study showing the effectiveness of using acupuncture during IVF. It compared results of women who underwent acupuncture, those who were given fake needle treatments, and those who had no extra therapy. Acupuncture treatments are done on the day of embryo transfer or insemination, and can be conducted in your fertility clinic, our office, or your home. Normally the treatments are done both before and immediately after embryo transfer or insemination to increase your chances of conception.

Patients will also be advised of additional dietary and exercise restrictions and educated in the use of moxabustion. Moxabustion is a Chinese herbal treatment consisting of the external warming application of the single herb, mugwort, at acupressure points on the body in order to warm the uterus, aid implantation, improve embryonic growth, and prevent miscarriage. Patients can take Chinese herbal medicine as well at this time. Most fertility centers accept the usage of herbs after transfer or insemination, as they do not interfere with the effectiveness of fertility drugs and can help reduce any unpleasant side effects from Western medications.
